Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School welcomed the Fremantle Dockers AFLW team to campus last week for a South West community visit, giving students, local coaches and young female footballers the opportunity to learn from elite athletes and staff.
The visit formed part of the club's AFLW Community Camp program and featured a range of activities designed to support player development, coach education and community engagement across the South West of Western Australia.
One of the highlights was the AFLW Super Clinic, which attracted more than 130 girls from across the region. Held on Palmer Oval, the clinic gave participants the opportunity to develop their football skills while training alongside Fremantle Dockers AFLW players and staff in a fun and supportive environment.
The School also hosted a Coaching Female Athletes workshop, attended by local coaches keen to expand their knowledge and understanding of coaching in the female game. The session provided practical insights and strategies while supporting the continued growth of girls' and women's football throughout the region.
For Bunbury Grammar students, the visit offered even more opportunities to connect with the AFLW program. Members of the School's female and male AFL teams trained alongside Dockers players and staff, while boarders and members of the Bunbury Grammar AFLW team shared dinner with the visiting athletes, hearing firsthand about life in elite sport.
Students enrolled in the School's High Performance Sport program also attended a presentation by Fremantle Dockers Head of Wellbeing Angie Bain, who spoke about athlete wellbeing, resilience and maintaining balance while pursuing high-level sporting goals.
The visit was a valuable experience for students, coaches and the wider community, highlighting the positive impact of elite sporting programs in regional Western Australia and inspiring the next generation of footballers to pursue their sporting ambitions.
