The Music In You

Being involved in music at BCGS brought plenty of exciting events throughout the year. In February, we kicked off with Music Camp, featuring an overnight stay at school. The camp was packed with rehearsals, barbecues, waterslides, exercise sessions with Mrs Holmes, and a movie night – it was a fantastic experience. In Term 2, we held the Big Band BBQ, where all the bands delivered impressive performances, including the world premiere performance by Year 6 band.

One of my personal highlights was the Music Tour in June. This year, we stayed at Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp on the outskirts of Perth and we did lots of different activities. We had the opportunity to perform for primary schools, participate in a workshop at UWA, take part in an Amazing Race around Perth’s CBD, and my favourite activity – a workshop with the Armadale City Band.

In Term 3 we staged the annual Music Gala, where we enjoyed stunning performances from all the bands, choirs and ensembles in the Primary and Secondary schools, as well as two standout piano performances by George Leu. George was presented with the prestigious Luke Di Bona Award, named after a much loved woodwind teacher who taught at the School for 27 years and who passed away in 2006. The Award recognises ‘a senior student who through their own musical endeavours has encouraged and supported others’ and George thoroughly deserves this honour.
Being the Music Captain this year has been a privilege, and I wish the very best for the future of BCGS music.
