There is always something happening with our Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Swimming program. Catering to both Primary and Secondary students, our program is designed to meet the needs of the individual. Students are encouraged to see the program as a way to improve their swimming skills and at the same time increase their fitness. Under the guidance of experienced coaches and teachers, the students are able to train all year during school terms. A range of sessions are offered to Primary and Secondary students each week.

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School is a Gold endorsed school. Please download the Summer Semester information

Please note that students (Primary or Secondary) that wish to join a training squad for the first time will be assessed by the coaching staff and advised their best starting point.  Students who show progress may be asked to move up to a higher level squad.  However, the final decision will be in consultation with the swimmer and their family.

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School students have the opportunity to be part of the following squads. Training application forms can be found in the Downloads section below. For more information regarding the selection criteria and coaches, download the "In The Swim" document.

Open (Coach: Bob Marshall)

Our Open Squad is designed for students aged 10 to 17 who have shown commitment and talent required of an elite junior swimmer. Students who apply to participate in the annual Rottnest Channel Swim as a member of a school team would be expected to train with this squad.

Senior (Coach: Kate Holdman)

Our Senior Squad is designed for athletes aged 10 to 17 who have shown commitment and talent required of an elite junior swimmer.

Intermediate (Coach: Keith Kavanagh)

Our Intermediate Squad is designed for athletes aged 10 to 14 years who have the desire to train for school swimming, surf training, triathlons and general fitness.  The squad is also a means to prepare for advancement to the Senior & Open Squads.

Development (Coach: Kelby Murray)

Our Development Squad is designed for athletes aged 8 to 13 years who have a passion for swimming and are interested in progressing to competitive swimming.

Opportunities are also taken throughout the year to test improvement and development. Students are encouraged to participate in Time Trials held by the squads, public swimming events such as the WA Swimming Dash and Splash Meets for novice swimmers (Primary students), the Busselton Jetty Swim  (Primary and Secondary students) and the iconic The Rottnest Island Channel Swim (restricted to Secondary students).

Students are invited to attend the clinics which are held early each term. Using facilities at both the School and the South West Aquatic Centre, students are put through their paces by leading elite development coaches from around WA. The students are involved in a range of activities dealing with goal setting, teamwork and, most importantly, swimming techniques. See Downloads below for upcoming events.

Wherever possible, students are offered the opportunity to attend a camp that involves travel to destinations across WA, interstate and internationally. Previous camps and trips have included Melbourne for the World Swimming Championships, Singapore for a swim against an International College and Albany for a swim against Great Southern Grammar.

Both Primary and Secondary conduct annual Interhouse Swimming Carnivals and students are also given the opportunity to represent their School in competitions against other colleges and schools. More information is available regarding the 2018 Primary Swimming Carnival and Trials in Downloads section below.

Students are required to wear School bathers and School cap when competing for the School. The costumes are available from the Sports Co-ordinator’s Office on the Secondary campus.  All students selected to swim for the School are provided with a School cap.  Replacements are available at the Sports Office.

Since 1999, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School has regularly had competitors in both the duo and teams of four sections of the prestigious Rottnest Island Channel Swim. Solo competitor, Nicholas Bowen (1999), was the first entry of a student from the School in the event. Since then, more than 130 students have added their names to the list of swimmers that have completed the 19.7 km swim from Cottesloe Beach to Thompsons Bay at Rottnest Island, either as a solo, a member of a Duo or a member of a team of four. Dozens of community members have provided their vessels and expertise to escort the teams to Rottnest every year. Without their invaluable support, it would be not possible for students from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School to experience one of the major endurance swimming events of the southern hemisphere.
