Student wins ADF Scholarship

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School student Hamish Leahy won a Microsoft Surface Pro as part of the Defence Technical Scholarship awarded by the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

The 16-year-old applied to be a pilot in the ADF, one of the 70 science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) related roles that is eligible for the scholarship.

Hamish said he was “very excited” when he received the news.

“This gives me confidence that I will be able to have a career in the Defence Force and also encouragement to work hard at my Year 12 studies,” he said.

There is no obligation for Hamish to join up nor is he automatically accepted; the scholarship acts as an incentive to undertake STEM subjects in Year 12 and then to join the ADF.

If Hamish continues on this career path, he can join the ADF when he turns 18 in mid-2019.

The ADF contacted Hamish for his next interview and he has nominated pilot in the Army, air combat officer and general service officer as his three preferences.
