Bunbury Leadership Forum

Bunbury Leadership Forum

On Tuesday, 12 June, the School hosted the Bunbury Secondary School Student Leadership Forum for student leadership groups from local high schools.

Students from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, Newton Moore Senior High School, Bunbury Catholic College and Dalyellup College came together to share ideas and experiences.

As part of the forum, students defined what a leader is, what skills they need to develop and explored how can they make a difference within their schools and the world.

Our Head Girl, Emily Graham, said the forum was “very beneficial”.

“I really enjoyed meeting other student leaders and getting to know them. It was nice just to talk about our schools, roles, subjects and Year 12 in general,” Emily said.

“I think these conferences are important to connect schools and allow students to meet each other. Coming from regional schools, our campuses are not very close so we don’t often do combined activities. Simply talking to other students about ways to change the school, events to organise or even tips for studying was useful.”

Guest speaker Dr Justin Harrison presented on strategic communication, which focused on de-escalating growing through conflict.

“Dr Harrison taught us the six subtle steps to persuasion and how to include them in our speeches, emails or when asking a favour. It was surprising to see that many of us do them subconsciously anyway. We also learnt about confronting situations and ways to approach them," Emily said.

The initiative was established in 2016 by Bunbury Grammar to facilitate contact between student leadership groups, creating a forum for the students to discuss their community-based projects, leadership ideas and struggles. It is also a chance for students to develop networking and leadership skills.
