Thailand Service Project

During December 2013, 11 Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School students from Years 10 and 11 along with four staff and family members travelled to beautiful Thailand to complete a service project and cultural visit.

To say a sensational time was had by all would be understating what was quite simply a life changing experience. From teaching English to Thai students through to resurrecting a jaded and tarnished playground, the students'service time was well spent, not to mention playing skip rope and soccer with the local children. On the cultural side of things, the group visited Buddhist temples, joined in worship ceremonies, ate authentic and delicious meals, visited the magnificent markets of Chiang Mai, and generally got to experience life in Thailand. At the conclusion of our trip came the highlight – spending a day riding elephants and bathing with the elephants in the local river – 'WOW!' Is an understatement. Our students were outstanding ambassadors for the School and all of them have expressed a desire to become more active in serving others, wherever that may be. One of the key things that impacted the students deeply was that with so little in the way of material things, the people with whom we came in contact were continually smiling and happy with their lot in life. There was a deep and meaningful lesson for everyone in this.
