BCGS student to represent Australia

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Year 11 student Joshua Wigmore has been named in Team Australia for the 2017 Oceania Athletics Championships in Fiji.

Joshua will compete in the Under 18 category in the 400m and relay, taking on athletes from across the Pacific region.

The 16-year-old said he is looking forward to the opportunity to represent Australia.

“It’s an honour to be able to wear the green and gold – it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Joshua said.

“It’s still pretty surreal. I don’t think it has sunk in yet.

“There will be a lot of tough competition, but it gives me a goal to work towards.”

Athletics Australia and Queensland Athletics announced Team Australia, consisting of more than 150 athletes, last month. The team features able-bodied and para-athletes in the under 18, under 20 and open categories.

The Oceania Athletics Championships is a biennial competition that welcomes athletes from national federations of the Oceania Athletics Association. Competitions commence on 28 June and spans four days.

Joshua was selected for the Australian Athletics Junior Championships for the first time in March, competing in the 800m, 400m and relay competitions after finishing first in the state 800m final.

“It was a great experience and an opportunity to put myself out there and get recognised,” Joshua said.

“Hopefully it can be the start to a professional career.”

Joshua will train three times a week in the lead up to the Oceania Athletics Championships.

Well done Josh! We wish you the best of luck.
