Amazing Rottnest Results

Twenty Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School swimmers took to the water for the Rottnest Swim on Saturday 22 February and generated some great results. The School entered five teams each made up of four competitors – the largest numbers of simmers we have entered during our 15 year involvement.

For the first time all of the teams completed the race in under six hours – a new School record. To top it off, the boys team “Let’s Just Go Swimming’ and girls team “The Wahoos” earned third palce in their respective categories of 56 plus male and 56 plus female.

“Let’s Just Go Swimming” consisting of students Jacob Dubois, Steven Bennett, Leon Doret and Gerred McCracken also set a new personal record of 4 hours 29 minutes beating their previous best of 4 hours 45 minutes. They also ranked seventh place overall. The scoreboard calculated their average speed was 14 minutes per kilometre of the 19.7km course.

The girls team “The Wahoos” recorded a time of 5 hours 30 minutes, smashing the old record of 6 hours 13 minutes. Team members Hannah Doret, Isabel Dubois, Eloise Pascoe and Abbi Roth averaged a speed of 17 minutes per kilometre.

The three teams “Rottnest Monsters,” “Marshy’s Mermaids” and “Mad Dizzy and Hallucinating” came in at times of 5 hours 40 minutes, 5 hours 50 minutes and 5 hours 47 minutes respectively, showing the depth of open water swimming that has now been developed at the School.

Swimming coach Mr Bob Marshall said “as I said to the swimmers on Friday at the briefing, I believed the conditions were ideal for them to aim for a below 6 hour effort, but the times recorded by them is a wonderful testament to their commitment and attitude.”
