Round Square

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School is a full member of the Round Square organisation. The School was inducted into this organisation at the Canadian international conference after being a regional member for three years. The Round Square organisation is comprised of 60 schools from around the world.

The Round Square organisation was founded upon the educational philosophies of Kurt Hahn. Mr Hahn was the Headmaster of the Salem School in Germany during Hitler’s rise and was forced to relocate to Scotland where he opened the Gordonstoun School. Both Salem and Gordonstoun were based on a philosophy that a student’s education is so much more than what occurs in the classroom; it also encompasses life experiences and opportunities. Kurt Hahn’s ideas also were instrumental in the creation of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and Outward Bound.

Round Square is based upon six pillars or IDEALS; Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service. The common goal for all schools is to develop their students not only in the classroom but also in physical, cultural and spiritual realms as well.

At Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School we encourage all members of our school community to become involved in the Round Square experience in a number of ways:

Camps: Year 9 students embark upon a mini Outward Bound experience. The students travel down to the South West of Western Australia where they engage in outdoor activities and sleep under the stars. In Year 11 our students all participate in a ten day Outward Bound adventure in a national park outside Walpole. The students sleep under the stars in bivouacs and trek through some of Australia’s most picturesque wilderness.

Duke of Edinburgh: 'Dukies' as it is known, is open to all secondary school students and involves the students striving to meet the requirements for the various Duke of Edinburgh awards. Most of our students gain the Bronze award.

CALM Bushrangers: The Bush Rangers is a co-curricular activity for students who are interested in the environment and environmental activities. The Bush Rangers do a range of activities from tree planting, recycling and rehabilitation work to building nesting boxes, camping, caving and also learning about the Environment from the Department of Environment and Conservation. The Bush Rangers is open to all students in the secondary school with students in different years taking on different projects and responsibilities.

Exchange: We currently engage in exchange in two ways. Our Year 8 students participate in two week exchanges within Australia with other regional member schools such as MLC in Sydney, Ballarat Grammar School in Victoria and St Philips in Alice Springs. Our Year 10 and 11 students are able to participate in international exchanges for a 6-10 week period.

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar students who wishes to participate in an exchange, should download and complete the following form and return it to Mr Connellan, the School's Round Square Co-ordinator.

Students from another Round Square school who wishes to exchange with our School should download the following form, complete it and have their Round Square representative contact Mr Connellan at damien.connellan@bcgs.wa.edu.au.
