Archives

The Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Archives works to preserve the tradition and history of the School and is vital part of our unique identity and cultural heritage.

Our School Archives is like a Memory Bridge that links the past present and future, assisting our School Community to learn from our past, understand the present and plan for the future.

The Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Archives was first established in the early 1990s with Mrs Val Gilmour, (the School’s first Librarian) as the Voluntary Archivist.  2001 saw Mrs Margaret Paterson (a foundation student) employed as the School Archivist and in 2003 a purpose-built School Archive was opened as part of the Lishman Library building.

 The Collection

Thanks to the foresight and diligence of the School’s founders and early Staff, our Collection dates back to 1967, well before the School’s Official Opening in 1972.  It provides an excellent history of the planning and development of the School.

Our Collection includes:
• Provisional Council, Board of Governors and Headmasters Records
• School Registers
• Staff and Student Records
• School Uniforms
• Trophies and Memorabilia
• Photographs, Slides, Movies, Audiotapes and Videotapes
• Oral Histories
• School Publications including the Bonifacian and the Grammarian

Access
Access to the Collection is available through the School Archivist according to Policies adopted by the Board of Governors.  Mrs Paterson is available Monday – Thursday, preferably by appointment.  Access to many of our items is freely available although 1-2 weeks notice may be required to enable them to be retrieved.

Use of Archives
Archival Displays are regularly mounted within the School Archives and for special events. Archival resources are available for use by staff, students and the broader community, under the guidance of the School Archivist.  Resources are also used for research for articles such as those published in the Grammarian and images are used to complement student and staff celebrations and reunions.

Volunteers
There is still a great deal of work to be done to collect, preserve, arrange and describe our collection.  Volunteers are welcome and can undertake a variety of tasks under the guidance of the School Archivist, including identify photographs.

Student Volunteers

Student Volunteers assist in the management of the current photo collection.  These students learn basic archival skills and their time counts towards their community service commitment.  Many go on to join the Bonifacian Editorial Committee.

Donations to Archives
Donations to Archives are welcome and received by the School Archivist under our School Archive Collection Policy.

Visitors and Enquiries
Enquires and visitors are most welcome.  Please contact Mrs Paterson on 9722 6000 or email at margaret.paterson@bcgs.wa.edu.au.
