The implementation of the full day Kindergarten programme opened up opportunities for the children to become involved in meaningful and ongoing projects. The full day also highlighted the importance for the children to have the opportunity to experience quiet times during their busy day. This led the Kindergarten teaching team to set the children the challenge of creating a cushion to be kept at school and used for afternoon rest time.

Each child painted a design on calico, which could then be made into a cushion for resting time. Some of the children decided to create designs using images of things they would like to think about when resting, others were keen to experiment with the effect of paint on the material. When the designs were ready, some of the mums came to school to help make the cushions. The children then had lots of fun stuffing their cushions before the final edge was sewn up.


The approach to learning at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School’s Early Childhood Centre (Kindergarten – Y2) is driven by the child-centred philosophy of Reggio Emilia.  The philosophy was founded by Loris Malaguzzi in Italy in the 1940s and continues to be focused around Malaguzzi’s fundamental belief that ‘each child is rich, strong, curious, powerful and full of wonder’.

At Bunbury Cathedral Grammar we have taken this philosophy and woven our wonderful Australian culture through it to create the very best in early childhood education.

We believe that children should be enabled to contribute to the learning process.  They are not empty vessels ready to be filled with knowledge; rather unique individuals who not only have a lot to offer to their own journey of growth, but also the journey of their peers. Early childhood educators are given the responsibility of helping each individual child to open the door of possibilities and to ignite his or her passion for growth.

The current Kindergarten programme allows for four full school days per week.
